You other guys with i 920's, what is your general idle/brose temp and when stress testing with something like occt, what's your max?

In the evening here, only about 26 degress inside, the comps sitting at between 38 and 42 but when stress testing, it cranks up to between 65 and 70 (diff cores).
I've reseated the HSF (true ultra 120) but no real diff yet.

I went to finally o/c last night and when sitting at 3.8Ghz, it just went insane temp wise.
Hence the reseating last night.

On the maximus board, guys get these Do stepping chips stable @4Ghz which is what i'm aiming for.

I didn't worry about it too much before as 2142 isn't cpu intensive but bc2 def is.

how much fps do you really need though to play bfbc2 smoothly?

What heatsink are you using? Those 720's definitely run hot.

This is what I found when I helped Tonyten with his new i7 920 PC.

The PC is a very nice i7 920, on a GA-EX58-UD4P with a GTX 275 and a 64GB
Gskill Falcon in a very cool Cool Master CM 690 case with 4 x 140mm fans + 2 x 120mm fans +
1 x 80mm fan just to cool the back of the CPU and a Noctua NH-U12P with 2 more 120 mm fans to cool the CPU.

I used Real Temp's cool down test to see what CPU temps we where getting with
a mild overclock @ 3.360 Ghz. It was idling at 50C which is high and within
seconds of the cool down test starting full load temps hit 100C, not good! We
had already agreed to lap the CPU and HS as I had found with my own CPU's that
it can make quite a difference.

Before starting to lap I used my piece of glass and a bit of thermal paste to
see how flat the CPU and HS were to start with, see below.

i 920 average temps Image00001

This i7 has a pronounced hump in the centre which could have contributed to
the poor temps we were seeing.

i 920 average temps Image00002

The HS had a milled finish presumably to increase surface area? It was
flatter than the CPU but to my mind the best setup is two completely flat copper
surfaces to provide maximum metal to metal contact.

As soon as I started lapping the bump in the middle was obvious.

With a lot of elbow grease I eventually got it to this stage

i 920 average temps Image00008

i 920 average temps Image00009

The HS came up similarly well.

i 920 average temps Image00006

i 920 average temps Image00007

After applying some thermal paste and putting everything back.

i 920 average temps Image00010

It was time to do some testing and see if it was all worth while.

i 920 average temps Before%20and%20after%20CPU%20Lap%202

As you can see the result was quite remarkable approximately 10C - 15C lower
at idle and 20C - 25C under full load.

Before:
i 920 average temps Cooll%20down%201

After:
i 920 average temps Coll%20down%20after%20lap

I will pull it down again reapply a different thermal paste as the noctua
paste used is the thick grey type. I want to see how the thin white stuff
performs as I think the temps are still a bit high considering the quality of HS
and number of fans in the case.
Just changed the TIM to Cool Master which is a thinner white paste this TIM is on average about 2 degrees hotter than the Noctua paste.
I tried a third thermal paste, a tube of Deep Cool Silver Tim $16.95 It actually
lowered 100% load temperatures by 5C which is significant. This i7 is now
running cooler at 4Ghz than it was at stocki 920 average temps Biggrin

The HSF is a thermalright ultra 120 and i use arctic silver 5 tim. It's never let me down.
The Hsf also was on a couple of 775 rigs i ran such as a e8500 and a q9550 and they ran super cool @ 3.8 and 3.6 respectively.

I was just curious about others experiences with the 920 and o/clocking and temperatures.
I see a few guys here run them too.

As for fps Cranky, i always aim for 120 constant. Especially since I've now gone back to 120+ monitors.
The clarity and lack of tearing etc is significant esp if you can achieve the fps to match the Hz rating.

The CPU seems to be very important in BC2 for fps and that may be to do with it being a port from the PS.

And wank value is always up there too Grin

Btw chook, i've read quite a bit about lapping and the temps are good but I always look at resale value and lapped units when selling are always veiwed warily but prospective buyers, mainly due to ignorance.
But that ingnorance keeps me from doing it. I hate losing money.

I never sell anything so never thought of that. Even if I did my need for speed would over rule the few dollars I might lose.

Hack.

i7 920 @ stock speed - air cooled
Idle temp unknown
Stress temp: beads of sweat start forming on my forehead. Higher temps again if I havent had a beer.

No shite chook. You dumped your rig in oil, what would someone say when their eBay purchase turns up dripping in that Cry

Btw, easy o/c on std voltage to 3.6Ghz. Could go higher but i always prefer to keep to std voltages if possible.

Found my temps are between 38-41 idling and up to 55-62'ish in game and if I use OCCT linpak stresstest (all 1's), it can hit 83 to 85 but no game etc will ever do that on 4 cores.

I may end up lapping the Thermalright ultra 120 yet and replace its fan with something of a higher CFM.

But the reality is it's stable, fast and temperatures are well within the i7's range.

When i do my little overclocks I don't worry about stress tests, I let the games apply the stress. Also need to remember the difference between winter and summer mode overclock. Either that or install this damn air conditioner in here.

New one of the experts would set me straight...Its all about the beer Guzzle

Mine stays stable at 3.68 with stock voltages, running any higher voltages
to get more Ghz results in temps soaring with air cooling.

Tried running @ over 4Ghz but idle temp was at 65degs....not ideal.

I do have a thermaltake water cooling system but not the bracket for the i7.

Yeah, thats what i found.

I shit myself when the quackquack alarm went on occt (temp alarm) but it was set at 80.

Spent 10 minutes searching for min/max o/clocking temp on google until I realized i7's run that hot.

I don't think it matters what good quality air hsf you use in summer as most seem to operate within 1 or 2 degrees of each other.

I might change the fan and boost airflow but only if i can keep the db level quiet.
Not keen on noisy sytems.

I'm thinking i might add a 2nd vid card yet, an ssd and possibly mod out a lian li, this one http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=9364 . It needs a window and a few cable management slots along with an extra inflow fan and powdercoating on the inner case.

I see the g.skill falcon II's now have trim support and are a reasonable price for a boot drive.
I'm unsure about the video card yet. I may just wait and see how the new nvidias perform b4hand.

Thats the beauty of x58, supports both sli and xfire @16x.

Case looks alittle small, might get abit cramped for room
especially for 3 X 5970 affraid

Had a quick look on the cases, this one looks ok
and has heaps of airflow
